Concept projects review

7 months have now passed from the beginning of the 15-month research period, from which the first three were devoted to in-depth preliminary studies. During the following three months, we concentrated on developing the ideas for three different concept projects. In the seventh month of the research, we received valuable feedback from external critics and developed a coherent concept outline.

During the concept development phase, we experimented with a range of straw construction options, including modular, prefabricated and more traditional straw building construction. All the solutions tested different housing typologies but collectively they all solved the SOS children’s village typology (read the Ukrainian competition blog). For some solutions this typology worked well but for a modular solution, for example, this typology was rather difficult.

The modular solution was an off-grid solution, which became the starting point for the form of the whole building. The solution has been developed specifically on the principle of data analysis, where for the off-grid solution we needed to find for example specific roof pitches and surface areas for solar panels, which was a result of people’s own usage patterns.

As a second solution, we experimented with the possibility of creating curved forms in the pattern system through the straw bales themselves. The solution was developed in a way where it would be possible to use both factory-made panels or to experiment with the tactics of self-build. The wall elements themselves created a curved pattern system – a wedge piece was inserted between orthogonal panels to create spatial situations of varying dimensions.

The final solution, a pattern system of posts and panels, opened up the possibility of larger scales, such as apartments, dormitories or public buildings. An important emphasis in this solution was on the façade, where we developed a catalogue of façade elements that can be used both in the design of new buildings and in the renovation of the existing housing stock.

As we had been working closely with our team for months, we also felt the need to hear feedback from outside. So we organised several feedback days where we met experts in their field. The engineers included Kristo Kalbre and Eero Tuhkanen, while the architects included Sille Pihlak, Siim Tuksam, Renee Puusepp and Roland Reemaa. Anna Tomingas, who has been a great help to us with the EAS application, also gave her feedback. Mikk Luht and Sven Aluste are also role models for us in terms of straw as a building material, and they were able to look at our projects from the point of view of straw construction. We were able to discuss both strengths and weaknesses, and the external feedback helped to bring the focus back to the original principles.

Based on the feedback from the professionals as well as our own analysis, we are moving forward with an idea that combines the strengths of all the different concept projects.
