1+X is a research group that conceptualises ecological building as a possibility for future architecture. We are deeply engaged in research to find innovative ways to integrate straw into the building sector. We advocate that modern architecture can and should be sustainable.
Our team consists of one engineer and five architects, which requires rethinking the classic work structure. We use the principle of integrated project delivery (IPD), where cooperation and communication between engineers and designers take place at every stage of the project.

In architecture, I am fascinated by process, the involvement of people and materials. Having studied at the EKA for four years, I believe that as architects, we need to be able to design independently, but also to create a background system and involve people in the process. It’s also important to think about what we build from and how, so that it is environmentally friendly, durable and also based on the properties of the material.

The allure of architecture has captivated me since my early years. Specifically, I’ve been thinking about the functionality of homes. The aesthetic of a residence is greatly intertwined with the client’s perspective and the architect’s powerness. Through my studies in urban planning and architecture at the EKA, it has become my passion to establish higher standards for clients’ visions and to promote practices in the field of construction.

I believe that architecture is not just for experts, but that people outside the profession should also be involved. Through the 1+X development project, we have experimented and explored natural building materials and self-building, which has opened up a new perspective on the role of architects in a changing world and how to encourage collaboration between different parts such as architects, engineers, builders and clients.

I am an architecture student at the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn, with international experience gained through Erasmus studies in Prague, Versailles, and Rio de Janeiro.. I have always been interested in the social rules and behaviours that everyone uses in specific spatial situations and political landscapes. I decided to study architecture in order to better understand the impact of architecture and how we can make society happy.

Studying architecture and urban planning at the EKA for four years has shown me that architects don’t just design buildings, they create experiences through architecture, by analysing how people live. They create something so personal for the client, which is ultimately a home. It is a great responsibility and also a great honour to be part of the process that starts with an idea and ends with someone’s dreams coming true.

I am a graduate of the Tartu College of Tallinn University of Technology, specialising in construction design and management. Since I was a little boy I have been fascinated by different constructions and how things hold together. My inner spark is to make designing better, faster and contribute to making the lagging construction sector more sustainable, while maintaining modernity in buildings.
